Now that the Cooler Master 3.1 Lite is tipped on its side, we have to clean up what used to be the bottom of the case. With some acrylic and a router, we can make a cover panel that hides everything. NEVER use a heat gun to try to speed up drying, even heat from a blow drier can damage some paint polymers...a fan blowing from a few feet from the workpiece is best. Also, never direct air downward onto a freshly painted surface, guess where any airborne particulates will end up....always direct airflow across. Looking good otherwise, I think you'll end up with something to be proud of.

    • @InsolentGnome
      @InsolentGnome 2 місяці тому

      It depends on your case. A lot of newer cases have mounting plates on the back side of the motherboard tray, but if you have an older case, you might have to get creative and make your own mounts. An SSD easily fits behind the motherboard tray of most cases and in a pinch you can even Velcro or double sided tape your drives to the floor of the case(or really anywhere they will stay). Other options might be an add in drive bay from an accessory maker, making your own drive bay, or even just drilling some holes in the floor of the case to mount the drives there. On a case like that Fractal in the video, if I needed to keep mounts for a couple of drives, I would probably decide which set of bays worked better for my idea and remove the other. The original plan for the case was to replace the motherboard tray and include space for mounting an SSD there. Unfortunately, it's really hard to give you good solid advice on what to do just because there are a ton of options and directions you could go.

    • @iamtheplumber
      @iamtheplumber 3 роки тому

      Thanks! The glass did surprise me, I thought it would be a lot more involved than it was. No problems with the airflow. The paint really isn't that thick, we're talking millionths of an inch. The foam filter probably slows the air down more than the paint.

    Does Paiting fill the holes in the mesh , will it affect airflow ?

    • @iamtheplumber
      @iamtheplumber 3 роки тому

      As long as you do light coats, it won't fill in the holes. Now if you're caking it on, it almost certainly will. If you do wind up with some holes filled, you can take a small drill bit and clean them out, but better just to use a bunch of light coats and avoid the hassle. And it shouldn't affect airflow much, we're talking shrinking the holes by millionths or thousandths of an inch in diameter, so yes, the airflow will be reduced, but not on a scale that you'd notice. I haven't had any problems at all with mine and it's been up an running constantly for about 3 years now.

    @InsolentGnome When you're modding the case. Is there a way to extend the front panel? I want to mount a radiator (280mm) on the front with a push / pull configuration and would need a slightly larger front panel to fit the radiator and fans. Thank you!

    • @iamtheplumber
      @iamtheplumber 3 роки тому

      The easiest way would be trading up to a Fractal S2 case with the ton of room they have behind the front panel. But you could build a spacer, for that much distance, you'd probably want to use MDF. Attach the front panel to that and then the spacer to the case. I'm not sure how much room you'll need, but I'd think anything beyond 3/4" might start to look a little funny, just because it would be hanging so far in front of the rest of the case. The hardest part would probably be finishing it to look like something. If you had custom paint that would be a lot easier, but getting something to match the plastic or Fractal's paint would be a pain. I'd probably do a color change on the front panel so they'd match. Even if it's just black, spraying the front panel the same color as the spacer would look better.

      This is what I use, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EIPQE0M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . It's the same size (18 ga.) and spec (300V, UL1007) as a lot of the cables I've seen on PSU units. You can go down to 16 ga. wire which would be better if you're overclocking or have really long runs, but I think it's more difficult to work with. It's bulkier which makes it harder to bend around in a case and the extra diameter makes it a pain to use in some connectors. So I usually stick with the 18 ga. It's good enough for millions of stock PSU's and it's easy to work with.
